Itinerary

Þingvellir National Park

This historically significant location once served as the site of Althing, Iceland’s ancient parliament. At Þingvellir, you will witness the visible boundaries of the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates, as they slowly diverge, causing the land between them to sink.

Geysir Geothermal Area

From Þingvellir we go on a scenic journey through the mountains to reach the renowned geothermal hot spring area surrounding Geysir. While the original Geysir is currently inactive, its neighboring counterpart, Strokkur, puts on an impressive display every 5 to 10 minutes, shooting water and steam into the air.

Gullfoss Waterfall

A short drive from Geysir is the “Golden Waterfall.” This natural wonder consists of two separate cascades, with heights of 11 and 22 meters. On sunny days, you might even catch a glimpse of a rainbow, adding a touch of magic to your experience.

Kerið volcanic crater

Last, we will explore the picturesque pseudo-crater known as Kerið, which took shape approximately 5,000 years ago. There is a lake nestled within its crater, creating a serene landscape.

Staying overnight at Myrkholt Cabin

Seljalandsfoss

We start the day with a drive to Seljalandsfoss, where the Seljalandsá River gracefully plunges 60 meters over ancient coastal cliffs. Experience the unique opportunity to walk behind the waterfall. Just 500 meters northwest lies another hidden gem, Gljúfrabúi, a waterfall that is well worth the walk.

Skógafoss Waterfall

Next on the list is a short drive to Skógafoss, one of the country’s largest waterfalls, boasting an impressive width of 25 meters and a breathtaking drop of 60 meters. On sunny days, the abundant spray from the waterfall can create a single or double rainbow.

The Black Beach

We then come to Reynisfjara, a beautiful black pebble beach adorned with striking basalt column cliffs reminiscent of a rocky step pyramid. Gaze out to sea and witness the awe-inspiring basalt sea stacks known as Reynisdrangar. This area is rich in birdlife, including the beloved puffins, fulmars, and guillemots.

Vík: Small little village for rest lunch and sites

Glacier Lagoon

From Vík, we head to Jökulsárlón, a glacial lake situated on the edge of Vatnajökull National Park. As the glacier receded from the Atlantic Ocean’s edge, the lake was formed, now around 1.5 kilometers away from the ocean and covering an area of approximately 18 km2. With depths exceeding 248 meters being Iceland’s deepest lake and is considered one of the country’s natural wonders. We then head back to Myrkholt for the night.

We will enjoy an Amphibian boat ride on the Glacier Lagoon.

Staying overnight at Myrkholt Cabin

For day 3, we take a trip into the Highlands of Iceland and discover Landmannalaugar,  an epic region forged by wildly different and compelling geological features, including lava fields and colored rhyolite mountains. Here we can discover many waterfalls and glacier rivers.

Hjálparfoss

We start the day driving to the “Help’s Falls,” which are situated in the Fjórsárdalur Valley, just to the north of one of Iceland’s most active volcanoes, Hekla. This waterfall features a two-step cascade that gracefully descends into a spacious plunge pool, all enveloped by remarkably distinctive basalt rock formations.

Gjáin

Two small waterfalls descend from the Rauðá River into the ravine known as Gjárfoss. These falls gained recognition as a filming location in the Game of Thrones series.

Háifoss and Granni

Standing at a height of 122 meters, is nestled along the Fossá River—a spring-fed tributary of Fjórsá, Iceland’s longest glacial river. The vista from this vantage point is truly breathtaking.

Crater Lake

Crossing rivers and navigating rugged gravel roads on route to Landmannalaugar will provide an unforgettable and exhilarating experience. Along the way, we will make a stop at the a Crater Lake, Hnausapollur, which was formed in 1477 and now boasts a cobalt-blue lake.

Lake Frostastaðavatn

Our journey continues to Lake Frostastaðavatn, just before finally arriving at our main destination. Upon reaching Landmannalaugar, we will have the opportunity to explore this awe-inspiring location for 2-3 hours, embarking on a beautiful hike. The Landmannalaugar area sits next to a dark-black lava field known as Laugahraun. Multicolored Rhyolite Landmannalaugar mountains have over 5 colors red, blue, pink, green, and yellow.

Natural Pool

After approximately an hour of hiking, you can unwind and relax in a natural hot spring. Alternatively, you may choose to explore the area independently, taking in the nature surrounding you.

Dómadalur

As we commence our return journey, we will take the Dómadalur route, winding through lava fields and traversing between towering mountains. Along this route, we will encounter numerous rivers that require fording, providing an unforgettable experience. Additionally, we will witness waterfalls that punctuate the landscape, further adding to the grandeur of our adventure.

Staying overnight at Myrkholt Cabin

On the fourth day, we will leave Myrkholt Cabin as we head north to Akureyri.

The Highlands

Explore the untamed beauty of Iceland’s interior on the challenging Kjolur mountain road, stretching from south to north (or vice versa). This route promises a captivating journey through the heart of Iceland’s expansive highland terrain. We drive between glaciers and geothermal areas, a blend of fiery hot springs and icy landscapes. On the way we will stop at a hot spring called Hveravellir where you can go for a short hike and soak in the hot water.

This day focuses on the hidden gems of Iceland that not many get to see.

Staying overnight in Akureyri.

Goðafoss

We start the day by visiting the famous Godafoss waterfall before heading to explore the geothermal area around Lake Mývatn. Here you will see unusual lava formations, mud pools, and other unique natural beauties.

Dimmuborgir

Your next stop is the Dimmuborgir columnar basalt area, also called the Black Fortress, a place where you explore a field of unusual lava formations and unique shapes that rise from the ground. Their outlines, according to legends, resemble trolls, elves, and other mythical creatures.

Námaskarð

We will drive through the Námaskarð pass, a high-temperature geothermal zone where the earth boils and gurgles. The orange and red landscape in this area shows how diverse Icelandic nature can be.

Dettifoss

The second most powerful waterfall in Europe, a site to see and explore. You will feel the spray from the waterfall as you make your way down to the edge for an impressive view.

Staying overnight in Akureyri
